I'd like to visit historic mosques like Al-Azhar and Sultan Hassan. What's the dress code and etiquette?

Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and women should carry a scarf to cover their hair inside. You'll remove your shoes before entering the prayer area (bring socks if you prefer), so slip-on shoes are convenient. Visit outside the five daily prayer times when possible, keep your voice low, and ask before photographing people who are praying. Many famous mosques like Sultan Hassan, Al-Rifa'i and Muhammad Ali in the Citadel welcome respectful visitors, sometimes for a small ticket.
